The US infrastructure needs to be re-fit to produce more energy from it’s rivers and oceans. The Mississippi river current alone could power 30% of the bordering states. But we can’t wait for the government and energy companies to move us to renewable energy. We will have to convert our homes and cars to renewable energy ourselves. Earth’s citizens must lead the charge to solar, wind and hydro power.

While I cannot verify the percentage of homes that could be powered by the Mississippi, I am sure you are right that this power could be harnessed to benefit a great number of people. I also agree the citizens should not wait for the government and energy companies to act for us. The government has enough to do trying to keep the economy afloat, address unemployment to name just a few. Everyone can help to decrease our independence on non-renewable fuel. Many of us have lost our jobs but if we use electricity, we can certainly buy an energy-saving bulb. It costs more up front but it saves us money in the long run.

I think most people who do not react to the urgency of energy crisis, feel powerless (no pun intended). They just don’t understand that saving energy could be as simple as changing a light bulb. I would love to see the power of the Mississippi harnessed but until then, I will drive less, turn off some lights and change some light bulbs.
